OK, I found that the Public permissions were set to view replies, so that explains that. re-setting them has solved the 'public viewing replies'... -

The issue is caused by incorrect permissions entry into the assets table. While migrating the posts, the topic will be inserted into the cjforum tables and corresponding asset... -

OK, solved this by setting Parent to [No Parent] for all of the sub-categories, unpublishing the previous root category, and re-configuring the Main menu item...
